Excerpt: Ecological Tanks, Inc. Model AS500 , and larger, wastewater treatment plants have been tested by Baylor University Department of Environmental Studies according to requirements listed in ANSI/NSF Standard 40 and meets or exceeds Class 1 plant characteristic requirements.
Some states require the use of a trash trap independent of this test. Ecological Tanks, Inc. recommends strongly the use of a trash trap or pre-treatment tank, especially in all cases where a garbage disposal is being used or may be used.
Additionally, Ecological Tanks, Inc. strongly recommends the use of a trash trap when using sprinklers, drip systems, or pressure dosing as a means of effluent disposal.
A minimum recommended size for a trash trap is one-half the daily rated capacity of the unit.
This recommendation enables enough capacity to store non-biodegradable materials over an extended period of time (several years) to minimize pumping requirements and overall maintenance on sprinkler, drip and dosing effluent disposal systems.
This size is also small enough not to interfere substantially with the aerobic performance of the unit or to raise cost excessively. For purposes of the unit certification, a trash trap is treated as an approved upgrade.

Question: fire ant damage to Aqua Aire Aerobic Septic

      (Apr 2, 2020) Richard said:

I have an Aqua Aire aerobic septic system. Yesterday my alarm when off. When I opened the box, the electricals were covered with fire ants. I mean, most connectors were covered. I turned off the power and cleaned it. The spinkler heads still work, but the alarm will not go off. Also, if I flip the switch to test the pump, it doesn't do anything. Do you have any recommendations?
This Q&A were posted originally at AEROBIC ATU SEPTIC PROBLEM FAQs

      Reply:

Nice going evicting the fire ants from the Aqua Aire control. Take a quick look at the wiring and connections and wire insulation before digging further into the control's test procedure.

Is it possible connectors were wet from having sprayed a cleaner therein?

Reader Comments & Q&A

Reader Question: Nyadic aerobic septic system

I just moved to 4 acre horse farm with horses and well. I have a nayadic system. The effluent pipe runs about 100 ft to a depression 30x30 ft. into the pasture. Is there a recommendation for an alternate 'drainfield' or pit?

There is room outside the pasture. I also have a shallow well(35ft deep with 15 ft of water). It is about 50 ft from effluent line. no codes out here Bill I. 12/11/11

Reply: contact information for Nyadic Aerobic Septic Systems

Bill.

Nayadic aerobic septic systems are produced by Nayadic, a division of Consolidated Treatment Systems, Inc. These systems are NSF tested and certified using a single tank for both the aeration of sewage wastewater and for solids separation.

While I could envision disposing of effluent in a more conventional drainfield than an above-ground depression (and I wonder who approved that), I would contact the company to ask for details about the intended means of disposal or dispersal of treated effluent from their system.

Give Consolidated a call at 800-503-0163. The company's contact information is in the references above in this article.[8]

While you're at it, ask them for an owner's manual for your system.

Ace garbage disposal manual

Nayadic also produces and sells rotary vane air pumps for aerobic septic systems that support Nayadic 500, 600, 800, and 1000 gallon per day aerobic septic designs.

Books & Articles on Building & Environmental Inspection, Testing, Diagnosis, & Repair

  • Our recommended books about building & mechanical systems design, inspection, problem diagnosis, and repair, and about indoor environment and IAQ testing, diagnosis, and cleanup are at the InspectAPedia Bookstore. Also see our Book Reviews - InspectAPedia.
  • Advanced Onsite Wastewater Systems Technologies, Anish R. Jantrania, Mark A. Gross. Anish Jantrania, Ph.D., P.E., M.B.A., is a Consulting Engineer, in Mechanicsville VA, 804-550-0389 (2006). Outstanding technical reference especially on alternative septic system design alternatives. Written for designers and engineers, this book is not at all easy going for homeowners but is a text I recommend for professionals--DF.
  • Builder's Guide to Wells and Septic Systems, Woodson, R. Dodge: $ 24.95; MCGRAW HILL B; TP;Quoting from Amazon's description: For the homebuilder, one mistake in estimating or installing wells and septic systems can cost thousands of dollars. This comprehensive guide filled with case studies can prevent that. Master plumber R. Dodge Woodson packs this reader-friendly guide with guidance and information, including details on new techniques and materials that can economize and expedite jobs and advice on how to avoid mistakes in both estimating and construction. Chapters cover virtually every aspect of wells and septic systems, including on-site evaluations; site limitations; bidding; soil studies, septic designs, and code-related issues; drilled and dug wells, gravel and pipe, chamber-type, and gravity septic systems; pump stations; common problems with well installation; and remedies for poor septic situations. Woodson also discusses ways to increase profits by avoiding cost overruns.
  • Country Plumbing: Living with a Septic System, Hartigan, Gerry: $ 9.95; ALAN C HOOD & TP;Quoting an Amazon reviewer's comment, with which we agree--DF:This book is informative as far as it goes and might be most useful for someone with an older system. But it was written in the early 1980s. A lot has changed since then. In particular, the book doesn't cover any of the newer systems that are used more and more nowadays in some parts of the country -- sand mounds, aeration systems, lagoons, etc.

Your home’s hot water heater makes it possible for you to take a nice hot shower, wash your clothes in warm water, and it supplies the water for your dishwasher. “These appliances have an average life of around 10 years and there are both electric and gas models,” according to Michael Hardt, owner of Providence Appliance Repair. So, if you live in your home for 30, it is likely that you are going to have to repair it a few times and replace it a few times too.

There are some issues that a homeowner can handle on their owner. Below, we have compiled a list of issues that can happen in gas and electric water heaters. If there is an issue that is specific to one type, we will make sure to point it out.

COMMON WATER HEATER PROBLEMS

THE WATER IS TOO COLD

A water heater that isn’t making the water hot, is a water heater that is not doing its’ job. This is a big problem and a full diagnostic test is going to need to be run on it. “This is a test that is going to require the knowledge and experience of a professional,” says Allen Cipriani, who provides appliance repair in Naperville, IL. They are likely going to find that the control valve or the heater element is the problem.

THE PILOT LIGHT IS OUT

This is an issue that only happens in gas water heaters. The thermocouple is the part of the water heater that lights the pilot light and if the pilot light is out, the thermocouple is probably broken. This is a complicated problem and you are going to need to call in a professional to fix this. If this seems to be working, the thermostatic control valve is the next thing to check.

THE WATER IS TOO HOT

There are two thermostats that work together to make sure that the water is coming out at the right temperature, an upper and a lower. If the water is too hot, there is a problem with one of these thermostats. Once you have narrowed down which one, you can take care of the problem so that your water is coming out the temperature that it should be.

THE WATER TEMPERATURE IS INCONSISTENT

This problem is a simple identify and replace. There are two thermostats on the heater that are set at the same temperature. If one of these thermostats is not working properly, it will cause an inconsistent temperature. Once you have figured out which thermostat it is, all you need to do is replace it.

THE WATER HEATER IS TOO LOUD

A majority of homes in America have hard water, which means that there are high levels of minerals in it. This hard water can cause mineral deposits to build up within the tank. This can happen in a gas or electric heater. This will require the mineral deposits to be cleaned out of the tank and the valves as well. In an electric heater, loud noises can also be caused by the heating element.

THE WATER HEATER IS LEAKING

The problem will require a little investigating to figure out where the leak is coming from. The pressure relief valves, gaskets, and drain valves are the most likely sources of a leak. Make sure to go over the heater thoroughly to make sure that you have found the right part to replace.

There are other issues that can happen to your water heater. The ones that we have listed here are the ones that are most commonly encountered. Homeowners can handle the most common of issues, but in the event of a more complicated one, call in a professional to make sure that the job is done correctly. Here are some we recommend.
